This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of obtaining your Alaska insurance license and becoming a licensed insurance agent in this breathtaking region.

How to Get an Alaska Insurance License

Your Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Pre-Licensing Education
If you plan to become a licensed insurance agent in Alaska, you must pass a licensing exam. To prepare for the state exam, you should enroll in a pre-licensing education course like the TESTivity Alaska Insurance Licensing Virtual Learning Experience. This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the insurance field. Through this interactive online class and study materials, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of insurance principles, regulations, and ethics, so rest assured, you will be prepared to pass the state licensing exam on your first attempt.

Step 2: Pass the Alaska Insurance Licensing Exam
One of the most important steps on your path to becoming a licensed insurance agent is successfully passing the Alaska insurance licensing exam. This comprehensive exam evaluates your knowledge of insurance concepts and state-specific regulations. Pearson VUE provides licensure exams for the Alaska Division of Insurance.

Step 3: Background Check and Fingerprints
As part of the licensing process, you will undergo a background check and provide fingerprints. This step ensures that only individuals with good moral character are granted the privilege of becoming licensed insurance agents in Alaska.  Here is a list of Alaska approved fingerprinting services.

  • Fingerprinting information:
    • Applicants must submit an FBI FD 258 fingerprint card to the Alaska Division of Insurance for the division to conduct a state and national criminal background check. A fingerprint card is only required if the applicant does not hold an active insurance license.

    • Fingerprint cards may not be uploaded via NIPR’s Attachment Warehouse.  The original documents must be sent directly to the Alaska Division of Insurance.

    • Submit one fingerprint card, with a $48.25 fee for background check payable to the State of Alaska.

Step 4: Submit Your Application
After completing your pre-licensing education and passing the Alaska insurance licensing exam with flying colors, it's time to submit your licensing application to the Alaska Division of Insurance. Ensure all required documents are included and accurate, as any discrepancies could delay the process.  Applications not completed within four months from the date filed will be considered withdrawn and a new application and application fees will be required pursuant to AS 21.27.040(f). If an applicant submits a paper application when the application may be filed electronically, an additional processing fee of $50.00 is required in addition to the $75 application fee.

The easiest and most common way to apply for your Alaska Insurance License is online through NIPR.

The licensing section is located in the Juneau office. Almost all documentation (excluding fingerprint cards) can be sent via email. The Alaska DOI accepts digital signatures, offers digital forms, and can provide credit card invoices upon request. Use insurancelicensing@alaska.gov for all initial contact attempts. If you must contact them by phone you will have to leave a voicemail and wait for them to return your call.

All items to be mailed to the licensing team must be mailed to this address:
P.O. Box 110805
Juneau, AK 99811-0805

Physical Address:
333 Willoughby Ave, 9th FL
State Office Building
Juneau, AK 99801

(907) 269-7900

Step 5: Await Approval
With your application, exam results, and background check completed, it's time to await approval from the Alaska Division of Insurance. This step may require patience, but it's a crucial one on your journey to becoming a licensed insurance agent.

Step 6: Start Your Career as a Licensed Insurance Agent
Congratulations! Once your application is approved, you can officially begin your career as a licensed insurance agent in Alaska. This opens the doors to a world of opportunities where you can assist clients with their insurance needs, help them make informed decisions, and provide valuable protection for their assets.

In conclusion, the process of obtaining your Alaska insurance license involves understanding the requirements, completing pre-licensing education, preparing for and passing the licensing exam, submitting your application, undergoing a background check, and ultimately embarking on a fulfilling career as a licensed insurance agent. To maximize your chances of success, consider enrolling in a reputable insurance licensing school that offers comprehensive courses and exam preparation resources.
