Step 2: Pass the Alaska Insurance Licensing Exam

• Fingerprinting information:

  • Applicants must submit an FBI FD 258 fingerprint card to the Alaska Division of Insurance for the division to conduct a state and national criminal background check. A fingerprint card is only required if the applicant does not hold an active insurance license.

  • Fingerprint cards may not be uploaded via NIPR’s Attachment Warehouse.  The original documents must be sent directly to the Alaska Division of Insurance.  

  • Submit one fingerprint card, with a $48.25 fee for background check payable to the State of Alaska.

Step 4: Submit Your Application
After completing your pre-licensing education and passing the Alaska insurance licensing exam with flying colors, it's time to submit your licensing application to the Alaska Division of Insurance. Ensure all required documents are included and accurate, as any discrepancies could delay the process.  Applications not completed within four months from the date filed will be considered withdrawn and a new application and application fees will be required pursuant to AS 21.27.040(f). If an applicant submits a paper application when the application may be filed electronically, an additional processing fee of $50.00 is required in addition to the $75 application fee. 

The easiest and most common way to apply for your Alaska Insurance License is online through NIPR.  

The licensing section is located in the Juneau office. Almost all documentation (excluding fingerprint cards) can be sent via email. The Alaska DOI accepts digital signatures, offers digital forms, and can provide credit card invoices upon request. Use insurancelicensing@alaska.gov for all initial contact attempts. If you must contact them by phone you will have to leave a voicemail and wait for them to return your call.

Do I need a certificate of completion from my pre-licensing course?

Alaska does NOT require you have a certificate of completion to sit for the Alaska insurance licensing exam.

Where do I take the Alaska insurance license exam?

How do I schedule the Alaska insurance licensing exam?

Step 1. From the Pearson VUE home page start typing "Alaska" in the search field and select "Alaska Insurance" from the auto populated dropdown.

Step 2. If you already have a Pearson VUE account, login.  Otherwise select "Create Account".

Step 3. Enter your personal information and create a password.

Step 4. Click "View Exams"

Step 5. Select the exam for the insurance license you have prepared for.  In this screen shot, we are selecting "InsAK_Health02, Alaska Accident and Health Insurance"

Step 6. Select the Testing Center you wish to test at, followed by the date and time.

Step 7. Ensure that your first and last name match EXACTLY what is on your government issued ID and then pay for your exam.

How much does the Alaska insurance licensing exam cost?

How long is the Alaska insurance licensing exam?

• Life insurance exam--1 hour and 15 minutes--110 questions

What is a passing score?

You need a 70% to pass the exam and get an Alaska insurance license.

What is the deal with “Pretest” questions?

When you sit for your Alaska insurance licensing exam Pearson VUE will add Pretest questions to your exam.  These are questions on which statistical information is being collected for use in constructing future examinations. Responses to pretest questions do not affect your score. Pretest questions are mixed in with the scored questions and are not identified. If you miss them all it doesn’t hurt you…but answering them correctly does not help you either.

What if I fail my exam, how early can I retake it?

In Alaska, you can schedule a new exam 24 hours after your most recent attempt; there is no limit to the number of attempts you can make on the same exam. 

Can I convert an Alaska Nonresident License to Resident License?

If you are moving to Alaska and already hold an Alaska nonresident license:

• Cancel previous resident license or change to nonresident status.
• Submit a State of Residency Change Form within 30 days to avoid incurring a late fee.
• Submit Fingerprints - see fingerprint section above for instructions.
• Exam requirement is waived when you apply for an Alaska resident license within 90 days of canceling a resident license in another state with the same lines of authority.
